ORIGINS
For more than tens of thousands of years the Cosmic
Mother was worshipped by all
She was perceived as Great Dark (Night), the Womb,
the Waters (Ocean), The Cosmic Egg...
Later She got an anthropomorphic image: Kybele, Isis,
Inanna, Ishtar, Asherah...
Later She "delegated" some
"functions" to Her Daughters (Goddesses) and Sons (Gods)...
Eventually She ("Tiamat") lost Her Power,
and was destroyed by the patriarchal God Marduk
Ever since She became demonized, pictured like a evil
dragon or monster.
The Gods(Goddesses) of the past are the Demons of
today
Every religion degrades the previous Deities into
Demons e.g. Guardians..
Unfortunately, this also happened to the Cosmic
Mother
Examples are "Demons", Kirtimukha's and
Kala's (Mahakala's!).
So, that's how we meet Her in temples, churches,
sacred places, sanctuaries...
Pay Her respect with the eyes of compassion through
looking beyond Her ugliness
Deep down Her Beauty is immeasurable!
COMMENT
In later ages patriarchy re-introduced the Goddess,
knowing that the people would otherwise revolt
In Hinduism the Primordial Mother was turned into a
"integrated" Deity. She became the consort (shakti) of Shiva (instead of Shiva
being Her Son/Lover!), in Buddhism Kuan Yin replaced WuShenglaoMu and in Christianity the
Virgin Mary became the substitute of the ancient Magna Mater
Through its multi-facetted character only Hinduism
preserved memories of pre-Vedic times, though, like Lajja Gauri, Aditi, Durga, Kali
and....Meenakshi

Kirtimukha/Kala
(Demonized Cosmic Mother)
|
These Kala's from Nepal, aren't they beautiful? They are
all slightly different. Equal to the Indian Kirtimukha's and the Javanese Kala's, they
show the Cosmic Mother in all Her aspects, despite the fact that through patriarchal
religion She has been degraded e.g. demonized. |
|
"Kala's" in the current patriarchal
religious system represent a God: the "God of Time", in fact they embody
"destruction". It was Shiva, who stole this aspect from the UrMother. The Mother
was subsequently degraded into a Demon, one of Her functions was to guard the temples of
the new male Gods. |
|
The miracle is that in depicting these Kala's, Her!
original qualities are still visible. She includes both "creation and
destruction". Creation is symbolized by the foliage that sprouts out of Her mouth and
eyes, destruction is expressed by Her awsome teeth. |
|
The Kirtimukha's/Kala's of the East still show a unity of
"Creation and Destruction". In the West - through its emphasis on emancipation -
these functions became separated. On the one hand the MotherGoddess (Isis, Kybele,
Aphrodite, Mary) as heavenly life-giver, on the other the Vegetation Gods ("Green
Men") emphasizing "death and rebirth" of the seasons. |
|
As a symbol the Kala's are impressive, if rightly
understood, of course. Always keep in mind, that they are distorted images of the Original
Cosmic Mother, the latter ruling "death and rebirth". The Real Mother is very
different from the image, though. She is "Emptiness beyond Emptiness", the Dark
Cosmic Womb, uninterruptedly giving birth to the Eternal Light (Son/Lover/God), while
destroying matter that is returning to Her. |
|
The "Mother" is nothing but Cosmic Law....
(Very scientific indeed). |
